Violence in Pernambuco: Five Homicides in Three Days Reveal Security Crisis and Lack of Accountability

Crimes in Petrolina, Moreno, Vicência and Santa Maria do Cambuca Raise Alert Across the State

On the night of Saturday, September 12, a crime shocked the population of Petrolina, in the Sertão region of Pernambuco. Guilherme Pereira da Silva, 27 years old, a professional tattoo artist living in the area, was executed in broad daylight on a public road in the community of Nova Descoberta. Evidence collected shows he was hit by more than twenty 9mm pistol rounds — a firearm type generally restricted and known for high destructive power. The sheer number of shots and the way they were fired reveal clear intent to eliminate the victim completely, leaving no chance for survival or rescue. Guilherme fell immediately and died before any emergency team could reach him. To date, no official information has been released regarding the identity or number of perpetrators, nor the motive behind the killing. His body was sent to the Legal Medicine Institute for examination, and the investigation is being handled by the Homicide Division of the Civil Police. Detectives are now retracing the victim’s final movements, relationships, activities, and any possible conflicts that might explain what happened. The case also draws attention due to the type of weapon used, which often indicates illegal arms circulation and potential links to larger criminal networks.

Also on Saturday, in the city of Moreno, in the Zona da Mata region, another homicide was recorded. Fábio André Santos, 39 years old, was walking along a street in the city center with his partner when two men on a motorcycle approached and opened fire repeatedly. The attack was fast and direct: Fábio was struck and died instantly, right there on the street, in front of the person walking beside him. The suspects did not stop, did not check the result, and fled immediately on the motorcycle, leaving no clear trail or witnesses able to identify them. Teams from the Military Police, the Forensic Science Institute, and the Civil Police were on site, collected evidence, took statements, and arranged for the body to be sent to the Legal Medicine Institute in Recife. The investigation continues, seeking to establish who was involved, whether they knew the victim, or if this was a planned and premeditated act. The fact that it happened in a busy central area, in full view of passers‑by, reinforces the widespread feeling of insecurity among residents and local business owners.

Then on Sunday night, September 13, the city of Vicência, also in the northern part of the Zona da Mata, recorded yet another fatal crime. Carlindo Caetano Barbosa was brutally attacked with a bladed weapon, suffering multiple deep wounds to the chest and torso. The first report reached authorities around 8:23 PM, when residents alerted the Municipal Civil Guard and the Mobile Emergency Service. Upon arrival, rescue teams found Carlindo still showing signs of life, lying on the street, and rushed him to the Municipal Hospital. Despite all available medical care, the severity of his injuries was too great, and he died shortly after arrival. Immediately after the attack, the aggressor fled, but fast coordination allowed police to identify and locate him: known locally as “Raimundo do Limão”, a resident of a rural area in the neighboring municipality of Machados, he was tracked down and arrested. At the moment of capture, he was found with hands and clothing still stained with blood — strong physical evidence linking him directly to the crime. He was taken to the police station and remains in custody at the disposal of the Civil Police, who are now investigating the circumstances, motive, and background behind the fatal confrontation.

Also in Moreno, in a case recorded around the same period, a man was shot while moving through the city center. Wounded, he tried to make his way toward help, but was unable to reach medical assistance in time and died from his injuries. The attack followed a pattern already seen elsewhere in the region: quick approach, shots fired, and immediate escape — making identification and pursuit extremely difficult. This case has been added to ongoing local investigations, which are checking whether it is connected to the Saturday homicide in the same city, and whether a single organized group may be operating repeatedly across the area.

Finally, in Santa Maria do Cambuca, in a rural district, yet another execution stunned the community. A man was inside a local bar — a place of daily social gathering — when he was approached by two men arriving on a motorcycle. The pair dismounted, walked up to him, and opened fire. He died instantly at the scene. The attackers fled the same way they came, without being identified or intercepted. The crime took place in an area traditionally considered quiet and removed from large urban centers, but it has shaken residents deeply, proving that violence has reached even the most isolated corners of the state.

Taken together, these five homicides — recorded in less than 72 hours and spread across different regions: Sertão, Zona da Mata, and Agreste — show that the security crisis is not limited to the capital or to any single area. Methods vary: high‑caliber firearms, motorcycles used for rapid approach and escape, attacks with bladed weapons — but the outcome remains the same: lives ended, families destroyed, and fear spreading through every community. In several cases, perpetrators act with apparent confidence, paying little attention to witnesses or bystanders — a reality that strongly suggests widespread impunity has become the main fuel for repeated violence. Authorities work each case individually, but society demands broader, coordinated action, integrated intelligence, and measures that address not just the crimes themselves, but the deep‑rooted causes and structures that allow so many deaths to happen in such a short time.
