Provocative Remarks Spark Debate and Reflection

First Lady’s Statements Examined for Factual Accuracy, Legality and Spiritual Meaning

At a public event in Piauí, First Lady Janja da Silva made statements that quickly drew national attention. She declared that “not even God can take this election away from Lula” and claimed that if the Bolsonaro family had their way, people in the Northeast would “eat grass”. It is essential to note: there is no confirmed record of any member of the Bolsonaro family having said that. The claim was made by the First Lady as if spoken by others, without proof that it was ever uttered. Her speech therefore carries not only controversial remarks but also an unsubstantiated attribution.

The most widely noted parallel recalls the Titanic. It was said not even God could sink the ship; days later, it struck an iceberg and sank. The lesson remains: no work, no power, and no human certainty stands above reality. When anyone speaks as if the future is guaranteed by higher authority, history often shows otherwise. Confidence that hardens into arrogance paves its own path toward reversal.

Legally, important principles apply. The Constitution establishes that all power comes from the people; an election belongs to every citizen who votes — not to an individual, family, or group. Speaking as if an outcome is untouchable contradicts popular sovereignty. Brazil is also a secular State: divine will cannot be invoked to secure a political result. Furthermore, the remark about “eating grass”, besides lacking verification, demeans millions of Northeasterners by implying their dignity depends on who governs, ignoring that the region’s progress comes from its people’s own labor. Attributing words to others without proof also violates the truthfulness expected of public discourse.

Scripturally, the message is clear. The Bible teaches God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. No passage guarantees victory to anyone in power. The phrase “not even God can take it away” reflects presumption — assuming divine will must align with personal desire. God serves no candidate. Invoking God to guarantee the future risks being contradicted by events, because the future belongs to God and to the people — neither can be commanded. Claiming others said what they did not say also finds no support in faith: truth is foundational to integrity.

Time distinguishes what endures from what fades. Words that overstate certainty or put unspoken words in others’ mouths do not stand the test of facts. What lasts is truth, justice, and respect for every citizen — values that depend not on who speaks, but on how one lives.
